It’s no secret that summers are brutal here in Louisiana. According to www.skincancer.org, “one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.” With thousands of cases being reported every year it’s important to protect yourself against sun. Here are some helpful habits to make sure you can continue to have fun in the sun.
There is a reason why sunscreen will always be at the top of the list when it comes to protecting your skin. Make sure it has SPF 30 and you apply it 30 minutes prior to any outdoor activity and then once again every two hours.
Stay Out The Sun During Peak Hours
Avoid the hours between 10:00 to 4:00, when the sun is at it’s hottest. Try to go to the pool or beach in the early morning or late afternoon hours. The sun won’t be as intense and you will avoid the huge beach crowds
Make sure to eliminate sun exposure by covering up. Wear long sleeve shits or pants made out of breathable fabrics such as linen. The breathable fabrics will keep you protected while allowing airflow. Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes as well.
Step Away From Tanning Beds
It might be tempting to get a quick summer tan a the local tanning salon but think again! Tanning beds give off UVA and UVB rays which can also cause long term skin damage.
Sun Protection Isn’t Only For The Beach
Many people use sunscreen only when it comes to taking a trip to the beach or a pool day. But sunscreen should be used every day, even overcast weather. Both UVA and UVB rays can penetration on the cloudiest of days. Also make sure to protect yourself while driving in your car as windows and mirrors reflect light.
